Food

Newly updated and recipe-ized food list is on the right – “The List” under “About.”

Which leads me to… I have *such* a love-hate relationship with meat.

I stick to organic & free range meat as much as possible because I do know where the “other” meat comes from and what’s in it… I only cook with meat probably once a week or so and we really don’t eat very much at all, but so many of these recipes contain meat.

I blame laziness. I need protein to feel like I’ve eaten, and it’s just so *easy* to use meat for this. And, I *hate* tofu and the fake-meat products. *Shudder*.

Actually, I’m not even a big fan of meat. I hardly eat beef, and almost exclusively eat chicken if I eat any meat at all. It’s just an easy way to top off a meal, get protein, and feel full. Everything else seems to take so much work.

Part of the problem is my motivation for not wanting to eat meat. Buying free range, organic, from the farmer meat eliminates basically all of my reasoning for not wanting to buy meat commercially. It’s not perfect, but so many of the problems that exist with mass produced meat are eliminated. I’m probably opening a giant can of worms, but my problem is that I’m not against eating animals, which is why I still do. I do believe in small operations not large, a high quality of life for the animal, free range, and humane treatment. What I buy – at least for the most part – ensures this. I also believe it’s important to be informed, so if you are choosing to eat meat you understand the impacts of this on your health, the animal, and the environmental/ecological impacts as well.

I need to be more focussed on not eating as much meat, however. I actually just need to get off my lazy ass and do a bunch of cooking so we have ready made food that *is* good for us in the freezer. I haven’t done that in a while, and I’m long overdue. Maybe tomorrow…

  1. I don’t like tofu, either. What I’ve found, though, is that I can mash it and add it to things and I don’t even notice it. I use a potato masher on it and throw it in spaghetti sauce, casseroles, whatever, I honestly don’t know it’s there. We very rarely eat fake meat, either, it’s mostly really highly processed food and we’re trying to avoid that as much as we avoid meat. It’s so hard to find good alternatives for protein, though…
