Tofino day 3

Hola!

Today:

  • Delicious homemade waffles for 10 with piles of ham and bacon
  • A 4 hour tour on Dave’s boat of Lemmens Inlet and Meares Island, part of Clayoquot Sound in the area around Tofino. It was neat to see all the oyster farms and check out the float homes tucked in all the nooks and crannies. Sadly, no fishing. Will have to save for a later date!
  • Naps! Naps are good after so much relaxation
  • Lasagna for 7, half of our original party left for home today but we welcomed Dee, a friend of Dave & Amelia’s, to the cabin for dinner and post-dinner beer

Tomorrow we head back to town, thankfully it seems like we’ve been away much longer than we actually have so we’ll be ready to get back to real life. Final update tomorrow!

Here’s an iphone shot of our boat trip. Mostly I just watched, but I figured I should take at least one shot, even if with my phone ;)

Tofino day two

Wedding day!

We are lucky to have photographed one or two weddings in Tofino every year since moving here 4 years ago. One of my favorite locations!

In true Tofino form, we had unexpected sun for most of the afternoon and the sky opened and it simply *poured* during the ceremony, only to shine sun again afterwards for photos. Good times!

The bride and groom were in great spirits and took the rain in stride.

We’re just downloading and backing up photos but I thought I’d share the iphone shot of Reilly’s screen I shared with twitter ;)

Tonight: party night at the cabin with the 10 of us (8 + Dave & Amelia). Tomorrow: heading out on Dave’s boat and hopefully fishing a bit just because I have a tidal license this year!

Cheers

Tofino day one

The first half of our party has arrived and we are settled into our ocean front cabin on the rocks – the same place we stayed last November. Fridge full of food and beer, beds and floor sleeping areas allocated to the party of 8 we are cramming into a cabin not meant for so many people, and the guitars are out.

The greatest thing about getting away for the weekend is that you can just forget about all the work and stress and crap that exists at home and just…. relax.

Of course, we are actually here to shoot a wedding tomorrow but they are a great couple and we’ll be with them for just a few hours for the ceremony, and we’ll be seeing them again next weekend in Vancouver for the much larger reception. I don’t consider the shooting part of what we do to be stressful, so this part doesn’t take away from our weekend.

So – Reilly, myself, Darren, Amanda, Josh & Shan, Kimli & Ed and occasionally Dave & Amelia (who actually live in Tofino and for whom we do not need to find floor space) are here for the weekend. Well, we’ll all be here in a couple of hours when the last half of our party arrives.

The cameras haven’t come out yet so I’ll leave you with a photo from our last trip!

Mad dash to the finish line today of being able to leave for an extended weekend in Tofino tomorrow

Multiple album orders finished and on their way to their respective album companies, files picked and poked and prodded, lunch with my lovelies Jeanie & Tracey, productive costco trip to prep for the weekend, and visiting with the band for a brief jam in between.

Now I sit with no shirt (it’s being washed) trying to power through the last of the email before I can start gathering items from our to-bring list, babysitting the last of the album uploads

Tomorrow: the start of 3 wonderful days in Tofino. A strict no bs, no being grumpy, no complaining, no anything but having a great relaxing time allowed for the pile of 8 of us who will be staying in close quarters. It’s kind of a crazy month for everyone, so the weekend will be a welcome treat.

Will check in soon from our ocean front weekend home!

Beef Stroganoff

In the middle of August we had a wedding in Victoria. I was barely off of crutches and not shooting at the time (we’ve got a few incredible people who we hire to be me!) – so I did what any reasonable person would do: I booked our stay at a beautiful boutique hotel downtown (the Magnolia) and arranged for a spa appointment.

Once my toes were pretty and I had been sufficiently toured around downtown by a nice boy named Shaun on a bicycle rickshaw, I picked up a bottle of wine, had a bath, and considered what I would order for dinner.

I settled on beef stroganoff and didn’t think much of it. Until it arrived.

There are few meals in my life that stand out as absolutely exceptional – and this was one of them. There I sat, pretty painted toes in a bathrobe on the bed in the hotel waiting for Reilly to finish shooting his wedding, eating one of the most incredible meals I’ve ever tasted. Somehow, what this chef did with a relatively simple recipe was… wow. I don’t even know how to describe it, other than to say that it was way beyond any rendition of stroganoff that I’d ever tasted. The flavours were incredible.

Since then, I’ve dreamt of the stroganoff on numerous occasions. I used what I knew about the ingredients to search for recipes, discovering that I could find different recipes with each known ingredient but never one recipe with all or even most of them.

Today I finally sat down with about 7 different recipes that had some piece that fit, I scrawled out my own rough instruction and ingredient list taking a little from here and a little from there, and I gave it a go improvising as I went.

Was it the elusive Victoria stroganoff? I don’t think anything could ever compare to that dish, eaten with pretty red toes in a bathrobe on the bed. It is however pretty darn close, and after enjoying it tonight with Reilly I can say this dish will be a permanent addition to our recipe box.

As Julia Child would say, Bon Appétit!

stroganoff

  • Mushrooms, sliced – about a pound
  • 1 pound good quality steak (look for flank or tenderloin), trimmed, sliced, and cut into short strips across the grain (important! so it doesn’t get tough)
  • Green peppercorns – about 1 heaping tbsp, smooshed. These come in a tin. (don’t skip these!)
  • Salt
  • Black pepper – fresh ground
  • 1 medium onion
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • Parsley – medium handful, chopped
  • Prepared horseradish 1 tbsp
  • Beef broth 1 cup
  • Pappardelle noodles 1 package
  • Dill  – 1tbsp fresh, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup flour (to coat beef)
  • Oregano – 2 tbsp
  • 1 Leek – top removed, thinly sliced
  • Brandy – 1/2 cup
  • Gherkins – 3-4 thinly sliced, for garnish (don’t skip these!)
  • Red wine  – 1/2 cup
  • Butter
  • Olive oil
  • Paprika
  • Shaved parmesan
  1. Saute butter, garlic, and onion until translucent. Add mushrooms with a splash of beef stock, cooking for 5 minutes. Add leeks and cook until moisture evaporates, about 5-10 minutes.
  2. Prepare and coat beef in a flour, liberal salt & fresh ground pepper, and oregano mixture. Brown pieces 3 min per side in 1 tbsp butter with a splash of olive oil. Transfer to a plate, may need to do 2 or 3 batches – do not crowd it or it won’t brown properly. When finished, deglaze pan with wine setting aside for addition to mushroom mixture.
  3. Add beef to mushroom pan once moisture has evaporated and vegetables are cooked. Medium heat. Add scrapings from deglazing, horseradish, and green peppercorns. Salt to taste. Add beef stock & brandy. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 min
  4. Before serving add parsley, dill, and sour cream. Heat through but do not boil (it will curdle)
  5. Serve over pappardelle noodles cooked al dente (about 8 minutes depending on the noodle, do not overcook!)
  6. Garnish with sliced gherkins (really, do not skip these), pinch of parsley, fresh shaved parmesan, and a dash of paprika

Enjoy with a glass of the red wine!

New!

Holy crap, every time I look at the calendar I am surprised. Only 3 1/2 weeks until we get possession of our new home! That’s, um, soon.

When we sold our place in Edmonton and moved to Vancouver the concept of ever owning here was extremely abstract. Our new place cost almost 4 times what we sold our place for just 4 years ago, so it’s kind of insane. I feel so fortunate to be in a position where we can do this.

Since leaving Edmonton I’ve missed our loft – great layout (square not long and skinny like everything in Vancouver), lots of windows, area we loved, stainless steel appliances, jacuzzi tub. Only now, we’ve somehow managed to buy our Edmonton place only a billion times better. All of the above plus an extra 500 sq ft, an extra level (valuable for live/work separation), street front access, a fridge that makes me ice (hey, it’s the little things), and it’s in VANCOUVER.

To add even more to that, when we first moved here we moved into the perfect building – close to Gastown and everything else, live/work zoned loft spaces with a HUGE 7000 sq. foot amenities room complete with underutilized darkroom, pottery room with multiple kilns, music rehearsal studios, woodworking shop, gym, metalworking shop, and common room. Pretty much any creative person’s dream and the only building of it’s kind in Vancouver. We are even somewhat responsible for the fact that our very good friend Darren bought in the building earlier this year – all we had to say was “jam space” and I think he was sold.

Only, even with 165 units in the building, there was literally only one unit that met our needs. Most were too small, the rest too large, and the few in between had awful layouts for having any sort of live/work space. Except one.

It showed up on the market earlier this year – we saw it (long before we were even thinking of buying, because I’m obsessed with the building), and lamented that it was too bad our perfect place was for sale and we weren’t buying. The right size, a great layout, street level access, and more importantly roughly in our budget. Regardless, we weren’t buying, so it was irrelevant. The listing disappeared a while later.

We started our home buying savings account a while back, squirreling away our pennies with a plan to buy next year. Being self employed it’s also – or so I thought – not so easy to get a mortgage so we weren’t sure how challenging that part would be.

We’d been checking out listings with the intent to be familiar enough with the types of places coming up in our price range so that we’d be well prepared when we started officially looking. Out of the blue, I came across a townhouse listing that made me stop in my tracks.

While we had no interest previous to this in a townhouse, this place was beautiful! Only a few blocks from here, completely renovated, hundreds of square feet of outdoor space, and for a crazy low amount of money. We went to the open house just for fun, only to hear everyone else lamenting about the area. Were these people insane?! This place was worth way more than they were asking for what it was, and we happen to love our neighbourhood regardless of how rough it might be around the edges. We made some calls, ran some numbers, and thanks to many things coming together we found ourselves putting in an offer.

Of course, if it seems too good to be true…. the mortgage was approved effortlessly, everything looked good and we were ready to remove conditions – until the inspection. The unit? Perfect in every way. The building, however? Unknown. Not bad, not good, just unknown. All an inspector can see is what’s on the outside and she can’t see through walls. Combined with a lack of detail in the strata documents our inspector issued the “possible leaky condo” caution and it was enough to make us back down.

Huh. Now what?

Well – the money was in place, the financing was arranged, regardless of the minor fact that we are in our craziest time of year business wise it seemed we were house shopping. Well, crap.

There was another place on the market that suited most of our needs. It was huge, storefront, zoned properly, priced right. So-so neighborhood (and it would mean moving away from where we are now), and needed tonnes of renos. We could see the potential it had but it didn’t make me fall over in excitement. We decided to look ahead at what we could do with it instead, and made an offer.

This time everything else was working and right out of left field, the bank didn’t want to finance the property over something minor. Sometimes life has a funny way of telling you what you already knew.

The night before we were to remove conditions that amazing-incredible-too-bad-it-won’t-be-for-sale-when-we’re-buying loft that I told you about showed back on the market. Turns out it hadn’t sold earlier in the year when they’d tried, and it was now up for an even lower price. What are the chances?

I told our mortgage broker I didn’t care about the second place, and told MJ our realtor extraordinaire to get us in to see it ASAP.

It was a chunk more cash than we’d been originally approved for, but Chris made it work. Within a few days our offer was accepted, strata docs and the suite passed with flying colours, and conditions were removed.

It’s ours!

It’s funny how things work out the way they’re supposed to. If we hadn’t spontaneously tried to buy the townhouse, we would have never been trying to buy now. And, if we hadn’t, our perfect place would have been long sold by the time we were in the market.

I can’t wait to give you a proper tour once our stuff gets in there. Party, anyone? It would seem we have lots of space :)

Regina

Regina Spektor rocks my saucy little world.

We first saw her when she came to Vancouver in early 2007. On the stage at the Commodore she was wonderfully awkward and alone.  She filled the room with her voice, with only her chair (brought from NY), guitar, and a piano (unfortunately not her own) to accompany her.

Today she took the more grown up stage at the Orpheum, in front of rows upon rows of screaming but generally polite fans. Rather than the sparse stage of the first show we’d seen, this one was filled with cables and speakers and instruments and other people. Her new stuff is powerful with the addition of drums and strings and extras, but I was pleased when everyone else left and we could listen to Regina alone. She is marvellous!

Reilly has graduated from bad crowd photos with snuck in cameras to being a portable recording machine, so he may have music to share at some point. The acoustics in the Orpheum weren’t quite perfect so the recording has a more bootleg feel than the Ani show we saw last week, the recording of which sounds like it was properly mixed in studio. Even though we own most of the released recordings of both artists, there’s something about having a cut of a show that you were actually witness to.

The power in either of these voices can’t be captured on tape, but each recording combined with my memory is good enough for me.

I used to write to share what I was up to with friends and family, mostly, and so I had something to refer back to. Now, between Facebook and Twitter, my blog just seems so disconnected for those things. Not everyone who could read it knows about it, I can’t control who does see it, it’s separate from my photos and feeds and status updates, and so on.

So, rather than using it to keep everyone else up to date, it makes sense that it would fall back to the role of journal. Only, that *scares* me.

I hate and I love that I don’t know who reads this. While on one hand I never write, I also know many people read blogs via RSS so regardless of whether I say anything at all for months on end I’m sure this will pop up in more than a few feeds. A few my friends and family, a few complete strangers, and the scary part – a few people who know me or know of me in person, but are business or professional contacts and I’m not sure what I think about that. I wish I could say I will ignore that, but in reality, it means that I’ll end up being more censored than I would be with just strangers and my close peeps.

Today is November 1st, and the start of NaBloPoMo. Last year, I even finished. I’m highly hesitant to commit as this is going to be one hell of a month, but at least for this moment, I might or I might not try to post. This may happen tomorrow as well and the next day, or it may not. However, the way these things work is if I don’t start today then I don’t get the option later, so there you go.

On the agenda for this month: deal with my broken-as-of-yesterday right hand aka iphone, finish a bajillion albums, shoot 3 weddings and some portraits, hang out in Tofino for a few days, get back on track with the magazine, figure out a way to cook more and order less, craft up a storm for the December edition of Got Craft, begin working with a personal coach to stay more focused, pack, move into the awesome new home/studio we just bought, and maybe have (yet another) major surgery. How about you?

Tights! In my size!

plus sized tights

Well, today is a happy day for anyone who is larger than a rail and whose eyes light up with jump-on-the-bed joy over the thought of awesome tights in every colour imagineable!

It’s true – I stumbled upon We Love Colors and almost tripped over myself on the way to the ordering page. They offer colourful plus sized tights in not only large sizes but in unheard of large sizes – as in, wayyyy bigger than me, even. Good times!

They had two options for regular opaque tights, and I bought a few of each as I wasn’t sure what the differences were, so I’ll attempt to share my thoughts on each. I’ve listed the pros and cons to both, but overall I’m very thrilled with my purchase and will definitely order again!

Solid Color Plus Sized Tights – $9. The good-if-they-fit option:

- These tights were the thicker of the two

- While I didn’t sacrifice a pair to test, I think these would be quite a bit less likely to run as the other type

- The toe is quite bulky – not super sexy for walking around shoe-less

- 45 colours. FOURTY FIVE. !.

- The sizing on these ones is off, but in a weird way. Unlike normal nylons with infinite stretchiness, these ones have a definite end point for stretch. So – in my case – they are more than long enough and big enough in the lower leg and waist, but my thighs are definitely at the limit of their size and I should be right in the middle of the size I chose. So, of course, this is my main challenge with this pair. I can squeeze into them  – barely – enough to wear them, but there’s no way with my shape that I could be any heavier. THAT being said, if I had legs that were better proportioned I wouldn’t want to go to a bigger size or they would be bunchy as there is a lot of length.

- Fitting issue aside, these seem like a great low cost pair of tights. They reminded me of putting on tights for dance class when I was little as they’re definitely tights as opposed to nylons. And dude, plus sized!

Plus Size Nylon/Lycra Tights – $15. The OMG check these out option:

- 45 colours. FOURTY FIVE. !.

- These ones are much softer and infinitely stretchy

- More like other nylons, these look like they’ll eventually snag and run so I’ll probably only get a few wears out of each pair

- These fit well and seem accurate to their sizing, if not a little on the big side

- The only downside to mention is that the seams at the top are a little bulky, so wouldn’t be ideal for a super clingy & showy dress

There are all sorts of other options on the site that I didn’t explore, but these alone make it a super great find. Ordering was easy, and they took just under 2 weeks to arrive to my place in Canada, which is expected for the cheap shipping. Outside of this find, black tights have been the only option that I’ve found to date, and I’ve always been at the largest size. Now, I have every colour under the sun and there are sizes for gals way larger than me. Good times!

Check them out yourself here – We Love Colors

Enjoy!

Announcing…

Over the past few months I’ve been pulling together the business plan for my newest venture. My mind races with possibilities, I tell people in half completed sentences what it is that I’ll be doing, and when people say they can’t wait to hear the full details I reply that neither can I.

I’ve had many streams of thought on the same topic… so many ideas and plans in the same areas, trying to figure out how to bring them together. I’ve been completely moving forward, and yet struggling on really solidifying the exact details so I can begin actual work instead of the endless brainstorming and planning I’ve been doing.

Then,  I was reading through one of the business blogs I frequent when one sentence jumped out at me like it was the only thing on the page.

And all at once, everything fit. The block I had in moving forward vanished as though it had never been there. I know exactly the structure that I’ll be using, I know exactly how everything I’d been planning fits in, and I know exactly how to incorporate all of the other cool stuff I was thinking that I’d love to somehow involve.

It answers every single question I had, and every one I keep coming up with. The planning has been simple – now the real work begins.

I believe in jumping in with two feet. I believe in the creativity and tenacity of every entrepreneur, guy or girl with an idea, and free spirit trapped in the corporate rat race. I believe being terrified is most often the beginning of something great. And I believe that you’ve never even dreamed of all that is possible.
